Between Truth and Gaze
- Yang Hye-jin’s Imbalanced Aesthetics of weighted images -
Jung Sanghee (Art Critic)
There is a gap between truth and representing the truth. It is impossible that one truth can be expressed with only one answer because every sensation for the representation is up to specific plans and situations. Our decision is often postponed with hesitation for it is controlled with kind of illusions. In some ways, it is natural to make capricious decision of believing or not just what to see. It is because of coexistence of doubt and reliable value for gazing images in our lives.
A crowd of reporters are watching only one side with cameras. Sometimes, there is to look another group straight in the face. However, its gaze heads not to the spectators, but totally to another specific point. Tension is increasing for the people blindly watching one side against dynamic stream and recorders and cameras on their hands. The weighted view of gaze and interest becomes more strengthened with wild waves and a shoal of fish. Yang hye-jin paints intuitive grasp confronting situations that no one knows exactly what is true. One huge incident took place many years ago. It was partially, repeatedly and consistently reported in the media. Yang got to experience to postpone judging the situation for the report. People who are dependent on the mass media for understanding only can get to know the event with the view of the media. To catch her focus is the process and phenomenon and that one event becomes known to the public through the media, not the shocking fact of the event itself. Seeing the situation of partially reported the incident based on kind of prejudiced judgement not on the whole story, Yang discovers special images of people and gaze shifting to only one side.
Many parts of our lives often depend on to a natural phenomenon like to change clothing and preferred foods for instance. The image exposed from the media like the natural phenomenon has strong influence over the standards and decisions to set from making value of our lives to making preference.
People listens carefully to respond to every situation and existence over the world reported in televisions, monitors, and smart phones. The more people is curious to incidents and objects, the more people may depend on the media. Once have a good look, we can get to know the media is packed with awkward images. Contrary to unvigilant view for the curiosity, the situation of postponing decisions between the gaze and the truth is the ultimately motive for Yang's works of art.
However, it does not signify that Yang reflects her critical stance on the mass media. She is the one who makes intuitive reinterpretation of concentrated image to only one side. She gets contents for painting from the images about diverse events in the media. It is to find a new artistic language under the existence of the gap between the truth and the gaze rather than to decide the truth and untruth. Putting the brakes on rapid flus showing with the raging waters and cameras is one of significant process in the paintings. The slow paintings put the brakes on real images at the fast pace to reconstruct the selected image from the media, to use limited colors and to paint over thin layers. As people to experience not to speak, Yang tries to represent the atmosphere of era rather than just the images.
The stance on the relationships of the weighted phenomenon of the gaze and the image is quite similar to the psychological process of change of the gap between stimulation and image. Following the first step of continuos stimulation on eyes, the second one of slowly focusing to fixed direction is finally connected to the third one of making images objectively agreed. Yang recreates mistaken or meaningless images of the weighted phenomenon from the media to the valuable images on the canvases under the postponed decision of a matter of right and wrong.■
